What to Look For in a Certified NLP Coach Course (And Why Not All of Them Are Equal)
If you’re researching NLP coach certification, you’ve probably already noticed that the options look similar on the surface. Most providers use the same language — “accredited”, “internationally recognised”, “transformational” — and it can be genuinely hard to know what separates a thorough, practice-ready qualification from one that ticks boxes without building real capability.
This post is designed to help you ask better questions, understand what you’re actually buying, and make a decision you’ll be confident about.

NLP Coaching vs Other Coaching Styles: What’s Actually Different?
Before choosing a course, it helps to understand what NLP coaching actually is — and what it isn’t.
Most coaching approaches share a foundation: active listening, powerful questions, creating space for reflection. These are good skills and they genuinely help people. But NLP coaching goes a layer deeper.
Where traditional coaching tends to work at the level of goals, plans, and conscious thinking, NLP coaching works at the unconscious level — addressing the patterns, beliefs, and emotional responses that drive behaviour beneath the surface. Instead of helping someone set a goal and work towards it, an NLP coach helps them identify and remove the internal blocks that have been stopping them from doing that themselves.
The results tend to be faster and more durable. Not because NLP is magic — it isn’t — but because you’re solving the actual problem rather than the presenting problem.
This is why NLP coaching is often described as solutions-focused, results-based, and transformational. It’s not therapy, and it’s not mentoring. It’s a specific and highly practical set of skills that, when learned properly, give you the ability to help people create real and lasting change.
The “when learned properly” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Which is exactly why choosing the right course matters.
What Most NLP Coach Courses Include
A standard NLP coaching course at practitioner level will typically cover:
- Core NLP tools and techniques — rapport, language patterns, representational systems, anchoring, reframing
- Goal-setting methodologies (often called “well-formed outcomes”)
- Basic coaching structure and session flow
- Introduction to beliefs work
That’s a reasonable foundation. But here’s what you should ask before assuming any course delivers it well:
How long is the training? Some NLP coach certifications are delivered in as little as half a day. That’s not long enough to develop genuine competence with the material — it’s enough to be introduced to it. When you become a Certified NLP Coach with us you will have done 70-80 hours of pre-course study and 11 days of face to face training with Laura, our Lead Trainer.
Who delivers the training? Many providers use multiple trainers across different locations, or rotate associates depending on who’s available. You may not know until you arrive who you’re actually learning from. On our course you KNOW Laura will be delivering all the training and is avaialble to answer YOUR questions based on her skills, knowledge and vast experience over more than two decades.
Is the coaching credential awarded during the training, or after? Some providers just focus on individual skills the course, and fail to give you the chance to put that together into a session or sequence of sessions. You essentially go away to complete a client coaching session - you leave with more homework. On our course you get to put everything into practice and leave qualified - able and ready to work with clients.
What accreditation does the course carry? There are several NLP accreditation bodies for NLP Coaching. They are not equivalent. Our course is accredited by the Coaching Division of the ABNLP (American Board of NLP). Some providers self- accredit (which means they mark their own homework essentially) and others are not accredited at all.
These aren’t trick questions. They’re the ones any serious buyer should be asking.

We don't squeeze your Coach Certification into an already packed Practitioner course
There are many providers out there now who offer 3 or 4 certifications in 7 days of training. Whilst on the face of it you may think that represents good value, it's not. If you just shop based on how many days it takes to certify or do the calculation of "oh that's great I can become a Practitioner for less money over there" then you're making a very common mistake in our opinion.
If you asked out students about our courses they would tell you that they are full of value, they offer great quality training (Laura share sooo much of her knowledge) and they leave confident in using what Laura shares. It takes Laura 11 days to train this content AND to get to the level of Certified NLP Coach students have to complete around 70-80+ hours of pre-learning ahead of live trianing (aiming at ensuring attendees are really well prepared) AND they have to pass two open book tests - one for NLP Practitoner and one for NLP Coach. They then get feedback directly from Laura on the Coach course.
Even after over 12 years teaching NLP I have absoutely no idea how other trainers think that covering more than just NLP Practitioner in 7 days is providing quality NLP Training. My question is: if it takes me 11 days to train all the content, and they're trying to do it in 7, what are they leaving out??? - I can tell you they are leaving out A LOT!!!

The quality of your training is heavily shaped by the quality of the person in front of you — their ability to model what they’re teaching, to work live with delegates, to share the wisdom that comes from actually using these tools with real clients over many years. Laura has been doing this for over 20 years as both a Certified Level 7 Executive Coach and an NLP Coach - she shows you for example how NLP CAN fit within and alongside traditional executive coaching (she shows how NLP can be used within GROW models of coaching).

Pre-Course Study Developed from Real Experience
Our NLP Coach pre-course study isn’t a reading list put together to satisfy an accreditation minimum. Laura developed it herself from 20+ years of coaching experience, specifically designed to prepare delegates to learn — not just to cover the theory.
There’s a difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is what’s in the textbooks (or these days ask ChatGPT for). Wisdom is what you learn from sitting with 900 people over 12 years and understanding what actually helps them change. What works with clients. We share that freely.
Small Groups, Personal Attention
We run groups of typically 10–12 delegates, with a maximum of 18. This isn’t a logistical constraint — it’s a deliberate choice. NLP coaching is learned through practice, and you can’t practice effectively in a room of 50 people.
Small groups mean more time with the trainer, more practice time per delegate, and a more honest learning environment where questions get answered rather than deferred.
A Full Progression Pathway
Our Certified NLP Coach course sits within a complete pathway from introductory programmes through to Practitioner, Master Practitioner, and Trainer level. If you decide you want to go further — and most of our coaches who want to make a part time or full time living from this toolkit usually go to Masters to compelte their Master NLP Coach certification — you don’t need to start again with someone else. Everything builds.
Ongoing Support After You Qualify
Qualification day isn’t the end of the relationship. Our graduates join the UYP Student Hub, a private community where they can stay connected, ask questions, share wins, and access support as they build their practice. Nearly 900 people have gone through our programmes — that’s a significant network to join.
What to Watch Out for When Comparing Courses
We’re not in the business of naming competitors. But we do think it’s useful to share some of the patterns we see in the market, so you can do your own due diligence:
Coaching certifications awarded weeks after training ends. If a provider requires you to complete a post-course client session before awarding your credential, you don’t leave as a certified NLP coach. You leave as a trainee. Make sure you understand what exactly you’ll be certified in — and when — before you book.
Half-day NLP coach qualifications. The material covered in a quality NLP coaching programme takes time to cover with any depth. Ask the training provider how much time within your programme is dedicated to specific coach training (rather than coaching skills such as rapport, meta model Qs etc - whilst these are key, you want to know about how to actually coach and build effective coaching relationships - oboarding processes, coaching agreements, ethics, reflective practice, how to put the toolkit together into packages, what to charge etc). A half-day of training may introduce you to the concepts. It won’t make you competent with them.
NLP as a module within a generic life coaching course. Some providers treat NLP as one component of a broader coaching certification. There’s nothing wrong with that as a personal development choice — but it’s not specialist NLP coach training. If NLP skills are specifically what you want, look for a specialist NLP training school, not a multi-modality coaching programme.
Anonymous or unnamed trainers. If a provider can’t tell you clearly who will deliver your training, or if they use “trainers” (plural) as a standard model, that’s a relevant variable. You deserve to know who you’re learning from so you can look them up and see if they have the kind of background that means they can offer you relevent examples and applied experience.
